The brief for Artist’s Living Room was to create facilities for a new kind of artist residency in London.
Inspired by the notion that the most powerful art is driven by encounters between the artist and the outside world, and a far cry from the ubiquitous white cube, Eldwin’s contemporary design is based on two distinct parts; one housing public space and display facilities and the other private accommodation and studios, joined by a triple height covered courtyard to foster exchange between them.
It is a space that promotes collaboration and puts both the art and the artist within a wider community. By facilitating everyday social encounters and everyday ‘banalities’, the artist residency itself, and not just its final output, becomes valuable.
